The Islamic Society of Greater Worcester’s plan to purchase a plot of farmland in Dudley for a proposed cemetery has drawn opposition in the townover the past several months, since a local landowner said he was going to sell 55 acres to them.
CBS Dudley residents don’t want their water supply to be contaminated from rotting corpses as Muslims do not use caskets to bury their dead, just white shrouds.
According to Dudley Town Administrator Greg Balyukonis, there could be a whole new twist in the story, as the town may buy the land instead.
“We have an article on our Town Meeting warrant this evening, and the purpose of the article is to give the town the opportunity to acquire the property under a section of state law called chapter 61A,” said Balyukonis.
In April, Islamic Society attorney Jason Talerman said of the opposition to the proposed cemetery, “Unfortunately…bigotry has reared it’s ugly head.”
“What’s been picked up has been, unfortunately, some of the anti-Islamic statements that have been made by individuals maybe not even necessarily with the town of Dudley–from a wider area,” said Balyukonis.
A Muslim man who beheaded a coworker in 2014 pleaded guilty to murder and requested execution. However, the judge in the case is proceeding cautiously and reserved judgement pending an assessment by a state psychiatrist.
Clarion Project Alton Nolen (aka Jah’Keem Yisrael), a convert to Islam, beheaded a co-worker at a food processing plant in Oklahoma City on September 25 after his employer fired him. His Facebook page frequently expressed support for the Islamic State terrorist group, Osama Bin Laden and other violent jihadists.
Mark E. Vaughan, an executive at Vaughan Foods and a reserve Sheriff’s Deputy, shot and wounded the devout Muslim Alton Nolen” who was attacking his former co-workers. Jah’Keem Yisrael beheaded one woman and was attempting to murder another via beheading when he was killed by Vaughan.
During his hearing he reportedly rambled about his faith, tried to fire his state appointed lawyers, prayed and called the judge aheathen and a pagan.
“I’m being (held) captive to the disbelievers of Allah, the one and only God,” Nolen reportdly told the court “It’s part of my religion that when death faces you, you do not back down.”
(Beheading threats are becoming common in Oklahoma)
His lawyers plead insanity, arguing he did not understand the court proceedings. The judge ruled him competent to stand trial.
“The judge is being very careful making sure that Mr. Nolen’s rights are protected,” said Greg Mashburn, the Cleveland County DA prosecuting Alton Nolen. “But at the same time if he has made a knowing and voluntary plea, then we can proceed on. But she wants to make sure we don’t do anything during the court process that causes this case to be reversed down the road.”
